Poll: What do you think of gender reveal parties?

Tacky or cute?

FOR YEARS NOW, we’ve been looking on at Americans sharing videos and photos of their bizarre gender reveal parties with varying levels of bafflement.

If, somehow, you have managed to navigate the internet without stumbling across a gender reveal video and you’re confused about what they entail, they’re videos that expectant parents make when they throw a party to reveal their baby’s sex.

The parents ask the nurse/midwife not to tell them the baby’s sex and to instead write it down and put it in an envelope. They give the envelope to whoever’s organising the party and the organiser plans the gender reveal. They can be pretty simple or really complex.

Some gender reveals involve cutting open a cake that is filled with pink or blue smarties, and some involve shooting something and seeing a pink or blue explosion (only an American would find out they’re expecting a baby and think “Wow, this is the perfect excuse to go and shoot something.”)

Regardless of whether the parents go with a cake or a rifle, the whole thing is very American and can be quite cringey at the best of times. This week, ITV’s This Morning hosted three live gender reveals on air, the last of which was probably the only one I’ve ever seen and thought “Ah, that’s kinda nice.” Why? Because the baby’s sex was revealed by Phillip Schofield, on his t-shirt. Who wouldn’t want Phillip Schofield to make that announcement?
